Family ties 'completely severed', softened only in 2024

Admitted

The Watchtower's own publications admit these facts. You can make this point from their library alone.

What happens when someone leaves

A Witness who is expelled, or who resigns, is named from the platform. The old word was "disfellowshipped." Since August 2024 it is "removed from the congregation." All Witnesses are then told to cut normal contact.

That includes parents, brothers and sisters, and grown children who live in another house. The books said the ties were "completely severed." Members were taught to withhold even a hello, on their reading of 2 John 10-11.

What changed in 2024, and what did not

The Governing Body Update #2 of March 2024 allows a simple greeting. It also allows inviting a removed person to meetings.

The August 2024 Watchtower changed the wording and some steps. The core stands.

No meals. No socializing.

No normal family life with relatives outside the home. A member who mixes with a removed person can be disciplined.

Their answer, at full strength

Expulsion is Paul's own instruction. He writes "remove the wicked man from among yourselves" and says not even to eat with such a man (1 Corinthians 5:11-13).

It follows a hearing, and only for serious sin with no repentance. It guards the congregation.

It also aims to bring the person back, and they cite 2 Corinthians 2:6-8 on return. Many who come back say the discipline is what woke them.

Family bonds are not cut: needed family matters go on, and people in the same home are not affected. The 2024 changes show mercy being adjusted over time.

Where that runs out

1 Corinthians 5:11 describes unrepentant flagrant sinners. It does not describe doubters or people who resign.

2 Thessalonians 3:15 says to keep admonishing him "as a brother." And the father in Luke 15 runs to meet the returning son. He does not require months of silent attendance first.

How strong is this argument?

They admit this themselves. The rules are in their own manuals and broadcasts.

The dispute is only whether it is biblical and humane. Grant the 1 Corinthians 5 point first.

Paul does command expulsion for open, serious sin. Then show the gap.

This is the engine behind every other teaching on this list.

What to say

"If I studied with you and later changed my mind, would you still eat dinner with me?"

How they answer this — at its strongest

Paul commands it: 'remove the wicked man,' and only after a hearing for serious sin.

The Witness defense is that expulsion is Paul's own command. He writes 'remove the wicked man from among yourselves,' and says 'not even eating with such a man' (1 Corinthians 5:11-13). It is applied only after a judicial process finds unrepentant serious sin.

It protects the congregation's moral cleanness, and it is designed to move the person to repentance. They cite 2 Corinthians 2:6-8 on reinstatement. Most removed ones who return, they say, name the discipline as what woke them.

Family bonds are not dissolved. Necessary family matters continue, and household members are unaffected. The 2024 adjustments show mercy calibrated over time.

The verdict

They admit it themselves. This is the engine behind every other case here.

The mechanics are fully documented in their own manuals, magazines and broadcasts. So the practice is admitted. The dispute is only whether it is biblical and humane.

Grant the 1 Corinthians 5 steelman first. Paul does command expulsion for open, serious sin. Then show the gap. The Watchtower system reaches further. It covers those who resign, those who doubt, and 'apostates' who merely disagree. It overrides 2 Thessalonians 3:15, which says to treat him as a brother. And it makes family the tool.

Severity is critical. This is the engine that enforces every other teaching on this list.
